Treatment of PAH
- Treatment of PAH has historically been characterised by few and difficult options
- anticoagulants to address thrombophilic predisposition of PAH
- diuretics for treatment of right heart failure
- oxygen to maintain oxygen saturation at > 90%
- calcium-channel blockers (not licensed for PAH). Less than 10% of IPAH patients benefit from calcium-channel blocker therapy. This figure is even lower in the other forms of PAH.29
- prostacyclin analogues can be challenging to administer
- Inhibitors of phosphodiesterase-5 enzyme
