Focused on the future – 10 years on...

Actelion Ltd, founded in December 1997, is a biopharmaceutical company with corporate headquarters in Allschwil/Basel, Switzerland, and almost 1,600 employees worldwide. We focus on the discovery, development and marketing of innovative medicines to serve highly unmet medical needs and improve or prolong patients’ lives.

Our culture stems from the passion for scientific innovation that inspired our founders just 10 years ago. We strive to combine that pioneering biotech spirit with the best professional attributes and the highest ethical standards applicable in the pharmaceutical industry. In this way, we create outstanding value for patients and physicians, employees and shareholders.

In 2007, we continued to grow substantially, with sales amounting to CHF 1.32 billion and a Cash EBIT of CHF 471.4 million.

Strong products on the market, a rapidly expanding pre-clinical and clinical pipeline, strong cash-generation and a highly motivated workforce around the globe form the base for long-term, above average growth perspectives.

With substantial growth expected in the years ahead, we are already making additional investments in talent and infrastructure. Where appropriate, we are open to alliances with other pharmaceutical partners – such as Merck and Roche – to maximize the potential of our innovations.

At the end of 2007, we had three products on the market: Our flagship is Tracleer® (bosentan), an oral, dual endothelin receptor antagonist. Tracleer® has been originally approved as the first orally available therapy for pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), a chronic, life-threatening disorder that severely compromises the functions of the lungs and heart. In 2007, Tracleer® was approved by the European regulatory authorities for the reduction of the number of digital ulcers in patients with systemic sclerosis and ongoing ulcer disease. At the end of 2007, Tracleer® was commercially available in over 30 countries worldwide. It is widely seen by PAH physicians as the best documented and best supported endothelin receptor antagonist available today, making Tracleer® the cornerstone therapy in the field of PAH.

Ventavis® (iloprost) – for which Actelion owns the US rights following the acquisition of CoTherix Inc. in January 2007 – is approved for the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). It is today the only inhalable PAH therapy on the US market.

Zavesca® (miglustat), which is in-licensed from Oxford GlycoSciences (now part of UCB group), is the only approved oral treatment for Type 1 Gaucher disease, a rare debilitating metabolic disorder.

Actelion’s research & development projects target highly unmet needs in numerous areas – such as cardiovascular, central nervous system, oncology and immunology, as well as anti-infective indications. Our rapidly expanding pipeline includes five compounds in the final stages of clinical development. Five additional compounds are also being investigated in either patients or volunteers.
